    Throwing away old computers

Years ago we often spotting something retro being thrown away at the local refuse dump and managing to save it. But these days far more people have got wise to the value of retro items. At least you would think!

I was watching a UK house renovation program called, The Great House Giveaway. The program buys a house at auction that needs a lot of work doing to it. They put 2 strangers together and give them the house to renovate, as well as a budget to do the work. At the end the house is then sold and they get to keep any profits.

One house was full of the last owners stuff. It was a mess but you could see they had been a computer user and gamer. The women renovating the house went through all the stuff and concluded there was nothing worth anything so they started to skip the lot.

As she was carrying everything out to the skip in her arms were 2 perfectly good looking Commodore 64s, which she then threw into the skip!

Her throwing away the computers is shocking to us.

But if I was doing a house clearance, would I know the difference between some expensive fine china, and crappy replica stuff? Would I know what a vintage ornament would look like, or would it seem like some dusty old crap to me that ought to be tossed into the skip? Would I check through every book on the shelf to see if there was a valuable first-edition-signed-by-the-author in there?

    I reckon I probably wouldn't.

If I was going through anything I would definitely put to one side anything that might be worth something and research it later. But then my wife's family are all quite knowledgeable on collectables. My mother-in-law used to do antiques collecting and restoring as a hobby. Specialising in jewelery and furniture. She made enough money when my wife was young to buy them a holiday cottage on the Isle of Wight! Quite impressive. So I'm always careful when looking through stuff.
