For a gaming laptop worth buying you always need to spend more than the basic 300+ laptops these days. Around 500 will get you quite a nice one that will play a lot of current games. HP are my favourite at the moment. Nice keyboards, and nice displays and cases, also nice spec, normally with 4GB ram and Windows 7 installed.
However, why get an external DVD drive. You can just replace the internal one. Normally on laptops it is very easy to remove the internal CD/DVD drive. Either a couple of screws on the back of the laptop or a sliding latch hold them in place, and once these are removed the drives just slide out of the case and a new one can be put in its place. Worth taking your existing drive out first to see how easy it is to replace.
