That would be quite cool, to update it with the current engine. Same would be good for HL, updated to the HL2 engine. Think I read something about that for HL but not sure.

Often fans make such mods.

I must be the only person never to have played the Half Life 2. As soon as I saw it required an internet connection just to get the game working I decided to give it a miss. To be honest though, I've played enough FPS games to last a lifetime...

Harrison mentioned First Encounters - has anyone watched the intro to another space sim - X2? I haven't played the first or third titles, but the intro on X2 is very reminiscent of Frontier.

Warcraft III - agree - and that Unreal intro, Ghost thanks for posting! The first few seconds reminded me of the Unreal Tournament Space Noxx (or whatever it was called) level. Damn did I enjoy UT. We should get a server up and running for ClassicAmiga, as it wouldn't exactly take much resources on a modern PC! Perhaps we can set up a private Amiga vs ST battle if we invite some peeps from the Atari forum!

If you have enjoyed FPS games in the past then Half Life 2 is definitely a game you should play at some point. Its environments, different set pieces and variety of gameplay make it far better than anything that came before. And the different areas of the game introduce some completely different gameplay. Some you will be exploring, or solving puzzles to progress further, or travelling by vehicle, whereas in other areas you might be stuck in a fight fight with enemy soldiers, the best of these being the Prison section and the section towards the end of the game where you are trapped in a building with enemies dropping into the area in squads.

The internet connection requirement shouldn't put you off. It's only to make sure the game is completely up to date when first installed, and there are ways around it if you really wanted.

The X series is brilliant and any fan of Elite would love it (if they haven't played it already). The intros in this series have always been great. X3 is definitely the best game in the series so far, introducing even more to the series and offering a lot more scope to eventually build a complete empire of systems with your own space stations, ships mining, carrying cargo between systems and escorting trade routes. A great game.

Another game (series) that has a great intro and some very nice cut scenes throughout the game is GuildWars. Many of you might not have seen the game though as it is an online MMO style game, but as Teho will confirm, it is a great Online RPG worth trying out, especially as it's completely free to play online.
