Thread: RetroSteve Upgrades His Graphics Card

I decided to try and upgrade my graphics card.

I upgraded to a second hand Radeon HD7770 back in 2015. It cost me £30 second hand, and when I built my new Shuttle XPC system, the HD7770 was transferred over as it had far better performance than the built in Intel graphics.

It still does quite well, but I really want to try out DaVinci Resolve for video editing, and the Linux version is quite dependent on NVidia cards, so I decided an upgrade was in order. So I got a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti off ebay for about £65.

I will let you know how I get on with it when it arrives.

I did actually consider the Quadro cards as well; they were quite tempting as they only take up one slot instead of two, and my machine only has two slots. But the Quadros sell for more than the equivalent GeForces. I wonder if it is feasible to fit a smaller heatsink on a GeForce? I won't be thrashing the card like many gamers do so it might be doable.

Not sure I would go smaller with a heatsink. A GPU is the hottest component in a PC.

Quadro cards are ok for video editing and 3D, but not well supported for anything else.

You've got a far more up to date setup than I have.

In fact, I don't think I even really have a setup to speak of.

That's a bit scary when Steve has a newer setup.
