Thread: Gear VR

Gear VR was a VR headset that uses a smartphone to create a VR gaming setup.

It is an interesting idea, as smartphones have the 6 axis gyroscope for real time motion tracking, they have the screen resolution, and are powerful enough these days to run the games.

But Gear VR relied on Android's built in VR support. For some reason Google removed it with Android 12, so the Gear VR headset and other similar devices are all now dead.

I got a free Gear VR headset with my older Samsung S8 phone. I played around with it at the time and thought it was cool, but never really bothered usb it much since. My old S8 is still in great condition but not used since I upgraded. Might see if Gear VR still works with it as it won't be running Android 12.

I saw a review yesterday of AR glasses which seem to be perfect to play on your handhelds, connected via USB-C. These Nreal Air give you a 1080p resolution on a 201" screen.

I'm so tempted, but they're not out yet.

Interesting idea. You can do that with a lot of the full blown VR headsets. Oculus called it Netflix mode and put you into a Netflix themed cinema room with a big screen.

Bring more lightweight and portable would be great for just byng and to see ax much later screen. I'm assuming unlike VR the screen moves with your head fixed in placed within the glasses? In full VR obviously the screen is within a virtual environment and stays in place when you move your head.

Ok, so I was watching some reviews about the Nreal AR glasses and they didn't get the best ones. But today I came across the TCL NXTWEAR S XR glasses and them on the other hand got quite good reviews, and you know me by now, I just ordered them. They were a kickstarter campaign on Indiegogo, here's the link if you wanna check them out: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/t...s-xr-glasses#/

And Russ from Retro Game Corps testing them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqtUhoQATLI&t=1s

I got the glasses yesterday, they're quite cool, played a bit PS2 Burnout on my Odin Pro, definitely great for retro gaming. Tested also with Netflix on the iPad, works great. Only downside is that the iPad screen doesn't switch off whilst watching whereas the Odin screen does switch off, so it consumes less energy.

Nice. I've not watched the videos about these glasses yet. Will have a look later.
