Thread: Who still misses the good old Cracktro days?

Yeah it's not always as simple as plug-n-play (although sometimes it is) as there is sometimes device incompatibility, or settings need tweaking, or even wires needing to go into a different port.

FOR EXAMPLE
My Samsung TV just won't output surround to the Yamaha amp through the HDMI cables. I've tried all the ports and all the options and they just wouldn't play nicely. It'll happily route picture and stereo sound
HOWEVER
The TV does have an optical out, and will output proper 5.1 through there AS LONG AS we go into the TV menu and change the sound output from TV speaker to Optical. If I don't make this output change, the thing is working in stereo but not 5.1, so it can easily 'trick' the unwary listener. Luckily the amp display screen has little icons for each speaker, although they are small, so it's possible to see what it's doing.

It's a bit of a faff but it actually works, so this is how I do it.

Moral of the story - you gotta piss about a bit before you get the results.

You have to have ARC support and at HDMI 2.1 cable for all audio channels to correctly send via HDMI. My older Samsung HDTV didn't have ARC support, but I could connect the TV to the AV amp via optical to make it send 5.1. Worked for Sky and all streaming services.

The 4K Samsung I got last Dec does support it and didn't need an optical cable. So even 7.1 is passed to the Amp. Limitation of optical is 5.1.

It's possible the cable may not be 'new' or 'good' enough as they are all probably relative cheapies, but I think I tried different ones before I got fed up..... it's a second hand amp so is a fair bit older than the telly.... and also, and this is the big thing here - i can't really be bothered to pull all the cables out from the ports and mess about in the cabinet again (I tidied the cables up when I set it all up) so I'm just going to leave it as it works well enough for me. I have no current interest in going above 5.1 right now.

The only benefit for 5.1 by switching from optical to hdmi is one less cable, so not really worth it.

All ARC & HDMI configured correctly here.

Sky are still broadcasting in Stereo for me.

Sky Settings Audio Set up.... The higher the Quality of sound you select, the quieter the sound goes. - Then the Adverts come on & the volume level to actually hear the Dialogue suddenly BLASTS you out of the Armchair.

NetFlix & Amazon or my Dune 4K Max Vision are fine.

If Deb wasn't insisting we have Sky, I'd tell 'em to "Do One" in a Heartbeat!

Very strange. I've never had an issue with Sky Q or Sky+HD before it. Always managed to get digital 5.1.

Adverts are definitely louder, but that's true on Freeview too, although my amp has normalise that helps to level the volume. But it then clips the top and bottom, so I don't use it for things like films.

Hi guys,

Speaking of cracktros, Void released such a styled intro this summer:

It is called Birthtro 36 and was coded by AlienTech from Italy.

Hope you like it!

I want you all to know that this problem is now resolved. My children managed to resolve it by, uh, breaking the TV with a wii remote in a fit of anger. No telly, no problem.

This is the third (!) broken TV in around two-and-a-half years

I like the music but I'm a grumpy old man now and found it hard to read a single line of scrolling text
