Very interesting device.

I've not looked into modding or flashing a 360 so don't know what can be done. I take it flashing is to flash the DVD drive? What does flashing the drive achieve? Ability to run backups?

Yep. Without a chip you had to flash your drive with a firmware to let it run backups. To do so, you had to remove the drive, connect it to the PC, flash it, and install it into the 360 again, of course no good for your warranty. With this device you can flash your drive without having to remove it.
