Thread: 3D Doom-clones
Puni/Void 14:52 22nd December 2006
Since the middle of the 90's quite a few Doom-clones was released for the Amiga. I remember playing several of them, like Breathless, Gloom and Fears. Have you played any of the Doom-clones for the Amiga? If yes, how did you like them when these games was first released? Any particular favourites?

The Alien Breed 3D games were probably my favourites. Breathless was also really good, and also the actual port of Doom. I was luck to have the PC original of Doom at the time so had the wad file to play the full version on the Amiga.

I agree that the Alien Breed 3D series was enjoyable to play. The developers managed to create quite a spooky atmosphere, which fitted with the overall Alien Breed concept. Personally I enjoyed Alien Breed 3D, the first version, the most. Even if the graphics was a bit blocky, it had good gameplay. Breathless was breathtaking when it came to graphics. I remember playing it on a 030 and running in 1x1 - it looked better than Doom!

Heretic and Hexen were also ported over.
A touch sluggish on an 030 but great using the 060.
Doom ran well on an 030.
Both top games.
Genetic Species was similar in style to AB3DII, very good.
The two player option in the Gloom series was good.

Liked all the Doom clones I played.
Have never played Breathless, but have aquired it recently.
Will have to give it a go.

I've never tried Heretic or Hexen on the Amiga, but I remember the port of Doom running fast on a 030.

Hope you will like Breathless. It is a graphically nice game. You can even look up and down, which was not possible in Doom at that time.

Oh, it would be great to be able to play Genetic Species on an Amiga powered by a 060. I'm sure it looks very, very nice. This game was btw developed by the former democrew Ambrosia from Denmark. They have released many good productions featuring fast 3D engines.

I never was into Doom like games, not then, and definitely not now either. I must add that I did not own an amiga to run such stuff. But I saw an ingame demo of Bioshock (PC) yesterday, and that was pretty awesome.

Bioshock has been the eagerly awaited sequel to System shock for some time now, and although graphically dated System Shock is still very highly recommended. Not all 3D first person perspective games are blast 'em ups like Doom and Quake. Take Deus Ex as a good example of a first person perspective game that is as much an RPG as anything else.

Y'know, I bought DEus Ex for a fiver from PC world 3 or more years ago and never got past the first level. For some reason I just didn't get into it.

A few months ago I tried it on this PC and it was mega-screwy. Would go really slowly and then speed up like crazy when I moved the mouse around (on the intro and cutscenes too).

I hear so many people rave about it..... maybe one day I will get it running and give it a proper go.

There is a patch for the original Deus Ex to make it run better on XP. It used to be on the official site.

There is also the sequal, Deus Ex 2, which while not as good as the original is still a good game in its own right and worth playing. You should be able to find that cheap these days too.
