Thread: Have you reached 1TB yet?
Harrison 21:33 28th February 2007
With the price of Harddrives now falling all the time and the price of a 500GB drive now under £100, I was wondering how many of you have now reached the magic 1TB of HD storage space?

I just added all my HD space up and I've a little over that myself.

Plus I am now considering building a 2TB external NAS unit using 4 500GB drives.

I have a bit over 2TB of space. I have enough for the moment, unless I begin downloading some not really needed stuff.

It's exactly the same for me. I'm OK for space as long as I don't download a lot of unneeded stuff and keep it on the drives. I do however need to burn and delete all ISOs I downloaded as soon as they complete to make sure I don't run out of space.

I just added all my drives up and it came to 2.6TB which was more than I thought which is good in one regard, but back in the other because they are nearly all full.

In theory I have 500 + 250 + 250 (last 250's external but connected 90% of the time). However of course actual size isn't the full size so I have just under 1TB of useable space.

Makes my 4TB HDD sound big!

I am hoping to upgrade my storage in the foreseeable future. I might go for a 10TB.

Wow! 19 years ago and the goal was 1TB. But actually things haven't really progressed that much for storage. Most prebuilt PCs are still only sold with 500GB-1TB in most cases, especially laptops.

But is that because most people don't really use much storage other than for the OS and the few programs they install? Especially if they are not gamers. Most people listen to music and watch films via streaming so don't need storage for that.

Where things have changes is portable storage. Back in 2007 we never would have guessed about a microSD card that's up 1TB+ Or USB sticks. Back at the time we were still thinking a 4.7GB DVD-R was big. Now we download a 4K film in good quality and it can be 32GB.

But for games they have become bloatware and silly. I was reading today that a full install of COD on the PS5 is 460GB!! That's just silly. In a standard PS5 with no extra M2 you would only be able to install the one game!

Strap back....

But H....

You like to Run 60Hz & scrimp on High end Gfx cards & use AMD CPU's....

Silly TB's was always going to happen to own....

These days, we have Stupid Fast Fibre that is still shit for gaming (In Cornwall) but is awesome for streaming films even if it's cached out.

BT couldn't wire a Lan Party up!

I don't think my TB storage is anywhere near yours in a "Country Mile".. yet I have so much more Horse Power under the hood & FPS beyond anything you could imagine!
