Thanks mate.

Submeg - How does it stand with (illegal) downloads in Aus? Are they mega hot on trying to stop it? I torrent a fair bit, and over there would be wanting to download some good ol british TV shows.

Holy shizzle, we've been out here for over 3 months already.... Time really does fly.

Haven't had much chance to come on here either, will be aiming to pop by more frequently.

Great to hear from you. How is it going down under? Enjoying yourselves? Any great pictures to share?

We're settling in, it's been a bit tough for The Lady, but we are enjoying it.

We have quite a few neat photos. Heaps, in fact. I'll put some up here shortly.

I'm guessing you already have? There has been a bit of a push lately to stop people, but not sure how serious it is, you may have seen it on tv?

I'd also like to see the photos.

Out of interest, why did they choose to employ you and not someone who already lived in Australia? Does Australia have a shortage of scientists?

It's a good question, Steve. Australia as a country has been trying to expand its science industry and that does entail getting workers from afar, especially as many australians do like to work abroad themselves.

I think the key reasons they brought me out here were my experience and my willingness to move. There aren't a huge number of people that have experience with these techniques, and a lot of them are already settled in jobs. The facility is also a fair way from Sydney, which may have made people reluctant to move out here. I know that this job was advertised a number of times before I applied, and in reality I don't think there were many other applicants (if any).

I did apply for another similar job in Sydney around the same time as this one I'm in now, and that was given to someone that already had work rights in Australia (think they may even have been a citizen). In all likeliness, with two candidates that are roughly equivalent, the one that already has the rights and is in the country would be preferable (understandably so). This place had to spend time and money getting the visa sorted and then me out here.
