Thread: How to format Syquest 135 drive with Amiga
outlawal2 22:18 16th November 2009
OK, so I picked up a SCSI Syquest 135 drive and hooked it up to my Amiga but it doesn't recognize it as anything other than "Unknown"... So do any of you gurus use a Syquest drive with your Amiga? Is there a specific driver or do I need all of the drive parameters, cylinders, etc.. To set it up manually. (And of course if this is the case do you have the necessary info so I can set it up manually?)

Whew!

Thanks guys...

It's been a very long time since I used one of these. Many many years ago these were really popular in design studios with Macs.

Take a look at: http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/MountRemHD

I think that should work. Otherwise there are other utilities/drivers on aminet that might.

The drive should work in a similar way to the SCSI Zip100 drive I use with my A4000. It mounts the drive as if it was a HDD. And you then format it just the same as any other drive.

Great info Harrison.. I will check this out when I get home...

When I tried to use HDToolbox it found the drive but cannot determine the size of the disk and then when I try to format it never completes the format job and I have to shutdown and restart the machine.. I can't tell if this is a problem with the media or with HDToolbox....

What's the storage capacity of the drive?

The Syquest EZ135 is an external cartridge drive with a capacity of 135Megs... This drive was originally in direct competition with Iomega Zip drives where the Syquest was based off of Hard drive technology and the Zips were floppy technology derived. So the pros and cons of each were that the Syquest was faster than the zips, but the zips were much more durable and able to withstand impacts. (Both of those directly related to the Syquest being derived from Hard Drives.)

So in theory it should show up just like any other hard drive, but it shows most of the info including the Syquest 135 name, but errors out with "Cannot determine size of disk". Looking in the details it shows up as a 2o meg drive even though it is actually 135 megs...
