Thread: Is technology a new form of Darwinism?

Every single day we are getting news stories like the following:-

"The man took a road that was closed a year ago when the area was flooded to make an artificial lake serving as a water reservoir -- he ignored three road signs warning of a dead-end," Piotr Smolen, police spokesman in Glubczyce, southern Poland, told AFP Friday.

"It was still night time and he didn't notice the road led into the lake. His GPS told him to drive straight ahead and he did," Smolen said, adding the driver had not been under the influence of alcohol.

The road ran straight downhill into the lake. The Mercedes mini-van was nearly entirely submerged and was unable to back out on its own after being inundated with water.

The driver and two passengers escaped unharmed from the submerged vehicle and waited on its roof for police and fire rescue crews.

The driver placed the first call to emergency services while still inside the sinking van.
Now this brings up two questions:-

1) Are the scientific elite creating new technology to indirectly wipe out the intellectually deficient?

2) If not then should we really be allowing access to technology to idiots and put our lives in danger? (If an adult has the mind of a child they lock them up, yet they allow kids to walk free.)

If the answer is yes to question 1 then boy do I hope that Santa has some extra helpers this year as I know quite a few people I'll be buying new technology for. (I just hope no one buy me any.)

Directly commenting on the actual story you posted. I've had to work with some Polish guys recently and I can assure you that they would all have done exactly the same thing! Very worrying considering how many of them are now here in the UK!

You'll be happy to hear then Harrison, that I recently read that over 100,000 polacs have left the UK over the past year... for Norway! Norway has been a prime target for them for years now, and now even the ones that have moved to other countries are leaving there to come here.

I have to deal with polish workers a lot, not only because I keep running into them at various sites but also because the company I work for frequently use them as well. That said, I don't think polacs are particularily useless. They're as bright and skilled as anyone, it's communicating with them that's the problem. Hardly any of them understand any norwegian (though some are quick and eager to learn), and the ones that claim to speak english in fact barely understand it. Speaking clear, proper english to them will get you nowhere, instead you have to use a form of english-norwegian pidgin complete with exagerrated handgestures to maybe get your idea across. You can explain something to them this way a number of times and they will smile and indicate they've understood, yet when you come back they've still done things wrong. I am so fed up with fixing the mistakes these people make, but I still maintain that it is not because they are stupid or unskilled. It's just that it's too hard to explain the finer details of a job to them. They'll get the general idea, but the smaller things you've stressed they need to do in a specific way almost always flies way past them. And I don't need to tell you how annoying that is!

After working with Polish guys on and off for the past couple of years I'm sure it's not a language barrier!
