Thread: The best Amiga platform games
Ghost 20:00 10th August 2008
Hello guys,

I have been going through the list of platform games that have been released for the Amiga and the sub-genre such as platform/beat-em-up and platform/shooter.

There have been so many releases that it is quite difficult to determine which ones are really good, and I mean games that are still good today.

Which ones do you think still count?

Well I take it that the following are still relevant;

Super Frog
Turrican 2

Edit:

Would Fire Force and the James Pond games also still count?

Personally I LOATH the Platform genere, however there are some games that just get into your heart...

I loved Super Frog, dispite of myself!

however to be honest.... I would say that the BEST (at least for me) would be FlashBack .... if there was ever a word created to explain that game it would be

Sublime!

Some of the titles i like are :

Flashback (as pointed out by Zetro Awesome game)
Turrican 2/3
Robocod - (simply cause of that infectious tune i even bought it for my ps2 )
Super Frog - (as above amazing tune and a lot better game)
Soccer Kid AGA or ECS - a brilliant mix of football and platform game.
Lionheart - Awesome graphics great if a little hard game.

I'm sure is many more that i can't think of right now just a few echo'ed already here and a couple i picked out from memory.

One more i can think of was Wacko Jr in WonderLand it was only ever a demo on a 17bit pd disc but the tune again was infectious (alister brimble). Would have been a good game if they'd finished it!

Well I was looking at the Amiga at the perspective from the gamer that I am now, thinking what games I would have gotten for the Amiga had I been around at that time and I realise that while I was quite into platform games back then I am not so much into them anymore.

Well not the average run-of-the-mill ones, and the Amiga had quite some of those games.

I guess I would have gone more for the great Amiga games such as:

K240
Starflight 1&2
Mega Lo Mania
Chaos Engine
Cannon Fodder
Walker
Captive/Liberation
North & South
Desert Strike
Apocalypse
Alien Breed /92/2/Tower Assault/3D
Lemmings

Regarding platformers I would stick to the following

Turrican 2
Super Frog
The James Pond series
Fire Force
Impossible Mission 2025
Lost Vikings (though I have that on the PC)

I think that perhaps you are the ONLY one whom would choose Impossible Mission 2025...

my god is that a chor!.... i wouldn't even call it a game.

Hi Zetr0,

I admit it wasn't really that good but I liked it for some reason.

People might ask why I put 'Apocalypse' or 'Fire Force' in this list but I personally liked them.

On hindsight I wouldn't have bought arcade conversions or cross platform games unless they were originally released on the Amiga before being ported to other machines. (Desert Strike being the exception)

I have also ignored all the adventures because I simply enjoyed those more on the PC, same goes for games like Sim City, Wing Commander.

Just the games that were great on the Amiga.

How about Rainbow Islands? I love that game and it is still as good as it ever was. And Bubble Bobble can still be put into the Platform genre, and is still really great simple fun.

Wolfchild is another favourite of mine that hasn't been mentioned yet.

I would also say Flashback has to be one of the best games on the Amiga, and the best platform game for sure. Superfrog was a great example of a console style platformer, and very polished too. One of the first arcade platformers of that type I finished without cheats!

How about Diggers? Does that count? Kind of a platformer/RTS.

@Ghost

Indeed Apocalypse is an AWESOME game.... i loved it from begginng to end! a great game... and some what under-rated! maybe because its a re-hash of an old C64 game. personally i felt it was better made!

@Harrison

Ahhhh Rainbow Islands... how could I not of mentioned that!??!?!

Loved it.... and beat it!!!!!
