now thats interesting...
not sure if microprose really intruduced the aftertouch as i am sure i could rack my brains hard enough for a name from the arcade machines would appear...
still i feel the author has certainly touched on the over complication of games, where the input is more of a challenge than that of the game itself.
I would like to see a return to top down scrollers, infact i may make me take some interest in a foot game again..... things started to go down hill after fifa 97 on the snes... LOL
Sensi will always be my love for a top-down-footy-scroller though!

That was an interesting article. I'm also not so sure the origin of after touch came from that game either. Would be interesting to find out as like you I'm sure the innovation must have originated in the arcades.
The writer definitely hit the nail on the head by stating that the problem these days is the developers are constantly aiming for realism, which in turn generates a lot of complexity in today's games. By contrast the games on our beloved Amiga of the 80's/90's were all about the pure gameplay and enjoyment. And I think that is exactly why we all still love the games from the retro era so much and keep going back to them today.
