Thread: Removing FPU
StuKeith 14:40 17th October 2007
I got a 2nd hand AmiTek Hawk 8mb ram card with a socket (PLCC? the one in the square case)and a 33mhz crystal.

Ide like to stick it into my Apollo 1230/50 card.

What is the safest way to remove the FPU from the card and place into mine?

Cheers.

You can get inexpensive chip extraction tools for the job. They usually come in those computer tool kits places like PC world sell for a few pounds.

Only thing to check is that the Apollo board will accept a FPU running at a difference speed to the CPU.

DO I need 50mhz fpu then?

Not sure, that's why I said you should check that before going ahead with it. I know that some boards needed the same speed FPU, whereas others didn't. If it does then you might be able to get away with overclocking the FPU by using a faster crystal.
